Per essere classificata come R&S un’attività deve rispondere ai seguenti 5 criteri:

Deve essere rivolta a «nuove scoperte/conoscenze»

Ovvero, relativa ad un obiettivo atteso di un progetto di R&S, adattato ai diversi contesti.

Deve essere basata su concetti/ipotesi originali/nuovi

Quindi, deve avere come obiettivi nuovi concetti o idee che migliorano la conoscenza esistente. Questo esclude qualsiasi cambiamento di prodotti o processi.

Deve essere incerto il risultato finale

Per incertezza si intende il tipo di risultato e il costo (compresa la ripartizione del tempo) che, all’inizio di un progetto, non possono essere determinati con precisione.

Deve essere un’azione formale e sistematica

Un progetto di R&S è un’attività formale eseguita in modo “sistematico”, ovvero con annotazioni sul processo adottato e sul risultato.

Deve essere orientata a un risultato trasferibile o riproducibile

Il fine di un progetto di R&S dovrebbe essere il trasferimento delle nuove conoscenze, garantendo il suo utilizzo e la produzione dei risultati.
